1. Entry Visa

International students should hold valid passports and X1 visas (for students who study more than one semester) or X2 visas (for students who study only one semester) for entry. Those who hold other types of visas should get them changed into student visas.

2. Residence Permit (RP in short)

The X1 visa holder should apply for Residence Permit within 30 days upon entry into China (otherwise he/she will be responsible for all the consequences, including the fine.) and have the following documents/certificates ready for such application:

  • Health Certificate issued by Beijing International Travel Healthcare Center

  • Visa or Residence Permit Application Form provided by ISO of BISU

  • Admission Notice of BISU and International Student Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/202 form)

  • Valid passport

  • One passport size (2-inch) photo (full-face, bareheaded, against pale blue or white background), and

  • Registration Form for Temporary Residence issued by the local police station. Students who live in the Foreign Student Dormitory Building may get this form at the front desk of the dorm building.

  • Students that have transferred to BISU from another university are required to present either the Transfer Certificate or the Graduation Certificate issued by that previous university.

3. Re-entry Visa

  • The enrolled students who have valid residence permit may, before the expiry date, return to the mainland China from abroad (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), not having to apply for entry visa again.

X2-visa holding students, who plan to spend their vacation abroad (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), should apply in advance to ISO for a re-entry visa. The following documents are required for the re-entry visa: Visa or Residence Permit Application Form provided by ISO, valid passport, BISU Admission Notice, JW201/202 form, one passport size (2 -inch) photo (full-face, bareheaded, against pale blue or white background), Registration Form of Temporary Residence issued by the local police station or the Foreign Student Dormitory.

4. Visa and/or RP Extension

International students are advised to be alert to the expiry date of the entry visa or that of the residence permit. If your visa or residence permit has expired, you will be fined ranging from RMB 500 Yuan to 10000 Yuan, or even be detained by Public Security Bureau. Students who want to continue with their studies at BISU should make sure that tuition for relevant courses are paid before coming to ISO for visa extension at least ten days before the visa expiry date. In the case that your visa expires at the end of the semester, you should see to it that this application for extension is done in good time before vacations. When approved, you may then go to Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau to get your visa or residence permit extended upon presentation of your visa or Residence Permit Application Form provided by ISO, the valid passport, the Registration Form for Temporary Residence and one passport size (2-inch) photo against pale blue or white background.

5. Changes of the Information about Visa or Residence Permit

New students who register with a tourist visa have to apply for the residence permit at their own expense. Non-freshmen students who fail to get visa extended as required but return to school with a new tourist visa have to re-apply for the residence permit at their own cost.  Students who have transferred from other cities of China should, in order to get a new residence permit, present the BISU Admission Notice as well as the Transfer Certificate issued by the previous university. If you change your residence address or passport number (due to its renewal), you should inform ISO of the changes within ten days, and go to the visa section of Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau for re-registration, presenting the visa or the Residence Permit Application Form provided by ISO, the valid passport, the Registration Form of Temporary Residence and one passport size (2-inch) photo against pale blue or white background.

6. Passport Lost

As soon as you realize that your passport is lost, you should immediately report to the local police station and go to the visa section of Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau to get a Passport Lost Verification Certificate, in order to apply for a new passport to your Embassy in Beijing. Then you should apply for a new RP in ISO within ten days since you obtain the new passport.

7. Others

All certificates and documents, such as the visa and certificates issued to you by ISO brook no alteration or changes or otherwise damage. Those who fail to obey this rule will be penalized and fined. International students’ family members are usually discouraged from accompanying students studying at the university. In special cases, they are only granted to stay with the students with tourist visas.
