Introduction to BISU |
BISU is a renowned key school of higher education of multi-disciplines, offering subjects and courses of philosophy, applied economics, Chinese Language and literature, business administration, national and regional studies, etc, with the studies of foreign language and culture as its main discipline and tourism as its specialized subject. BISU has 24 teaching and research institutions, and over 10,000 registered students. The University has established a multi-dimensional, multi-layer education system providing graduate, undergraduate, continuing education, and Chinese learning and studies programs for international students. It is an important base in China for the teaching and research of foreign languages, translation, tourism, and economics and foreign trade. With the principle of talent cultivation and academic research for international cultural exchanges, BISU distinguishes itself with the development of Foreign Language Teaching and Tourism Management as its specialized programs, producing interdisciplinary talents with international horizon and cross-cultural awareness. The University, therefore, enjoys an international reputation for its outstanding teaching and popularity among students. Historical Events Thanks to the great care by the late Premier Zhou Enlai and approved by then Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping, Beijing Second Foreign Language Institute (now the BISU) was founded in 1964. This new foreign language institution of higher learning was under the leadership of China International Cultural Liaison Commission. On October 24, 1964, a grand ceremony to mark the founding and commencement of the school was held. Mr. Guo Moruo inscribed the name for the school; Mr. Li Chang, commissar and vice director of China International Cultural Liaison Commission, was appointed president of the school. Later in June 1970, the China International Cultural Liaison. Commission was disbanded, and the school came under the leadership of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and China National Tourism Administration successively. In 2000, BISU was transferred to the jurisdiction of Beijing Municipality. Teaching Faculty By adhering to the concept of people-orientedness, and promoting strategies for “good talents, strong school”, BISU has cultivated and gathered in the school an impressive number of high-level scholars and teachers. The University now has over 500 professional teachers on the faculty, most of whom have obtained academic degrees or otherwise studied abroad. Of these teachers nearly 50% are professors or associate professors. There are more than 60 foreign experts on the school faculty as well. BISU is proud of having 7 “Model Teachers of Beijing”, 1 “National Outstanding Teaching Team”, 3“Excellent Teaching Teams of Beijing”, 8 “Innovative Academic Teams of Beijing”, and 9 “Top Pioneering Talented Teachers”and“Pioneering Academic Talents” awarded by Beijing Municipality. Academic Disciplines Building Led by disciplinary development, BISU aims to cultivate talents and carry out research for international cultural exchanges. With foreign language studies as its main discipline and tourism management as its characteristic discipline, BISU has developed a diverse mix of disciplines such as language and literature, management, economics and law. Among these, foreign language studies, tourism management, business management and international trade are four Beijing municipal key disciplines under construction. BISU offers Master’s Degree programs in 4 First-tier Disciplines , i.e. Foreign Languages and Literature, Business Administration, Chinese Language and Literature and Applied Economics, and in 22 second-level disciplines, i.e. English language and literature, Japanese language and literature, Russian language and literature, German language and literature, French language and literature, Arabic language and literature, Asian and African language and literature (only Korean available now), Foreign linguistics and Applied linguistics, Comparative literature and world literature, Aesthetics, Linguistics and applied linguistics, Ancient Chinese literature, Modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Finance, International trade, Accounting, Business administration, Tourism administration, Spanish Language and Literature, International Cultural Trade, Event Management and Hospitality Management. We are also eligible in offering Master’s degree for 5 professional programs, i.e., Master in Translation and Interpretation, Master in Business Administration, Master in Tourism Management, Master in International Business and Master in Chinese International Education.
