INTRODUCTION TO BEIJING INTERNATIONAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1964, Beijing International Studies University (BISU) is a nationwide renowned key comprehensive university of higher education and has developed into a multi-disciplinary university incorporating liberal arts, management, economics and law, with the specialties of foreign languages and tourism as its most distinguishing feature. Selecting students nationwide, the university takes it as its main task to train professionals proficient in foreign languages, tourism, economics, trade and finance, for the national economic construction and social advance.

The university offers 25 specialties providing undergraduate programs. They are Chinese Language and Literature, Teaching Chinese To Speakers of Other Languages, Journalism, Chinese Language, English, Business English, Russian, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Finance, International Economics and Trade, Marketing, Corporate Finance, Corporate Finance (English instruction), Tourism Management, Hospitality Management, Event Economy and Management, International Politics, International Affairs.

Currently the university has an enrollment of more than 10,000 Chinese and more than 1500 international students including postgraduates, undergraduates, preparatory students and language students.

 4. Chinese-Language student program (above one semester): Chinese

The School of Chinese of Beijing International Studies University is mainly responsible for Chinese courses teaching. It is a special school that enrolls and teaches international students, providing the specialty of Chinese (including tourism direction, finance direction and education direction) for undergraduate program and also Chinese language learner programs. The School is among the first batch of organizations that are authorized to hold the HSK Exam in Beijing. The HSK Exam is held five times annually in April, May, June, October and December.

 5. Preparatory program (above one semester): Chinese and specialized Chinese

The School of Chinese of Beijing International Studies University is mainly responsible for Chinese courses teaching. The program aims to train the students to meet the basic requirements of Chinese proficiency, related professional knowledge and cross-cultural social skills to continue with professional study in a specific major at Chinese universities.

 6. Short-term program (under a semester, over ten students): based on the different demands of learners, Chinese Language courses can be arranged on different dates including the summer vacation.

A. Matriculation terms for non-Chinese-major undergraduates

1. In the age bracket of 18-50 in good health.

2. Holding a senior high school graduation diploma at least (presentation of the latest diploma, academic record and two pictures is required).

3. Holding certificate of new HSK Level 5 or above.

4. Passing the major test and the oral Chinese interview held by the applied department

5. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, latest diploma, certificate of HSK Level 5 or above, academic record, photocopy of passport or residence permit, two pictures.

B. Matriculation terms for Chinese-Language undergraduates

1. In the age bracket of 18-50 in good health.

2. Holding a senior high school graduation diploma or above (presentation of the latest diploma, academic record and two pictures is required) or fresh foreign graduates from Chinese full-time high schools.

3. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, certificate of HSK level 3 or above, the latest diploma, academic record, photocopy of passport or residence permit, two pictures.

4. Applicants who couldn’t provide the certificate of HSK level 3 should otherwise provide proof of previous Chinese learning experience and pass the entry exam held by the School of Chinese, including both a written test and an oral test.

C. Matriculation terms for postgraduates

1.  In the age bracket of 18-50 in good health, holding a undergraduate diploma.

2. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, degree certificate and diploma (presentation of the original documents is required upon registration), university transcript of academic record, certificate of new HSK Level 5 or above, two reference letters. Applicants who are studying in other Chinese universities should also provide: a photocopy of the residence permit and a transfer letter from the International Students Office of the previous university.

Application for Chinese Language student Program

1. In the age bracket of 18-50 in good health, holding a senior high school graduation diploma at least.

2. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, photocopy of the diploma (the original document is required to be submitted upon registration and for currently enrolled senior high school students, the enrollment certificate from the school is required), photocopy of passport or residence permit, two pictures.

3. Application deadline: May 31st (fall semester) and Nov 30th (spring semester)

Application for Preparatory Program

1. In the age bracket of 18-50 in good health, holding a senior high school graduation diploma at least.

2. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, photocopy of the diploma (the original document is required to be submitted upon registration and for currently enrolled senior high school students, the enrollment certificate from the school is required), photocopy of passport or residence permit, two pictures.

Applicants for the fall semester need to provide a photocopy of the certificate of HSK level 2 or HSK level 1;

Applicants for the spring semester need to provide a photocopy of the certificate of HSK level 4 or HSK level 3.

Application for General Advanced Student and Senior Advanced Student Program.

1. In the age bracket of 18-50 in good health, holding a senior high school graduation diploma at least.

2. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, photocopy of the diploma (the original document is required to be submitted upon registration and for currently enrolled senior high school students, the enrollment certificate from the school is required), the transcript of school academic record and photocopy of new HSK Level 4 above Certificate, photocopy of passport or residence permit, two pictures.

3. For applicants, additional documents including the copies of undergraduate above diploma and academic record are required.

4. Applicants who are learning in other Chinese universities should also provide:

(1)a sealed transfer letter from the International Studies Office of the University

(2)a copy of his/her visa in China

Application for Short-term Program

1. Age from 18 to 50 in good health

2. Time: summer vacation annually (During the period, mid-course student is acceptable)

3. Documents submission: resume, Beijing International Studies University Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, two pictures

4. Classes arrangement: 15 credit hours per week from Monday to Friday 8:30-11:30 during summer vacation. Students are free in the afternoons and weekends.

Courses: Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, Listening Comprehension, Video, Situation Dialogue, Writing and Composition, Grammar, Chinese Painting.

2. Matriculation

Upon verification, Beijing International Studies University will send out “Visa Application Form for Study in China” (JW202/JW201) and “University Admission Notice” to the accepted students before January 31st (spring) or July 31st (autumn). Holders of the above-mentioned two documents and the health examination certificate are supposed to apply for the Students Visa (X1 or X2) at the nearest Chinese embassy or Chinese consulate.

 3. Health Examination

The international students who will study over half a year should go through health examination before entering into China and submit standard health examination forms to the university (available at the embassy or the consulate), inclusive of original blood test report, to be checked by Beijing Health Center to make sure all the items of the forms are complete, otherwise the students will take medical examinations again at their own expense at Beijing Health Center. The students will pay 60 RMB for the inspection fee if all the items are complete. The students who applied for the Students Visa, but do not take physical examinations prior to entering into China must take health examinations at Beijing Health Center (about 400 RMB).

 4. Registration

Applicants are supposed to hold the original documents of “Visa Application Form for Study in China” (JW202) and “University Admission Notice” and the health examination certificate and 8 passport-size photos to go to Beijing International Studies University for registration formalities on the prescribed date. Applicants who miss the prescribed date and fail to fulfill it within 10 days with necessary extension formalities will be disqualified.

 5. Insurance

According to the relevant rules of the Chinese government, international students are supposed to buy medical insurance when they stay in China. Therefore, Accident Insurance and Hospitalization Insurance are required to be bought upon registration at their own expense of 400 RMB half a year and 800 RMB per year.

1. For Dorm No.2, public kitchen and washrooms with public facilities of laundry (coins only) are shared with other international students.

2. For Dorm No.7, public washrooms with public facilities of laundry (coins only) are shared with other international students. There’s no public kitchen. A curfew policy is applied, which in winter is from 11:30 pm to 6 am the next day and in summer is from 12 midnight to 6 am the next day.

3. The deposit of 500 RMB shall be paid upon check-in at international students Dormitory. The deposit will be refunded when the student checks out if the property is not damaged.

4. All the above-mentioned information is only supposed to be reference. The final decision shall be subject to university’s arrangements.

5. 100-degree electricity quotas will be provided to each room per month. The surplus part will be self-supported.

Notes:

1. Tuition and boarding fees are due at registration. Students who don't pay within l0 days after registration without special excuses will pay a 5% overdue fine.

2. Autumn semester: September 1st to January 15th the next year;

           Spring semester: March 1st to July 15th

3.  Residence fees during winter and summer vacations will be charged separately.

4.  Health examination fee in China will be self-supported.

5.  When new students enroll, the university may go through the Residence Permit application formalities on them behalves, and the service fee and the visa fee should be paid at students’ own expense.

SCHOLARSHIP

CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP

In order to enhance the understanding and friendship between the Chinese and people from all around the world, and to further the communication and collaboration in different areas, the Chinese government launches a new scholarship program, supporting excellent students, faculties, and scholars worldwide to enter top universities in China to study or conduct research. The China’s Ministry of Education entrusts the Chinese Scholarship Fund Management Committee to be responsible for the enrollment and management of the Chinese Government Scholarship. The scholarship is divided into full scholarship and partial scholarship. The full scholarship covers tuition, on-campus housing, living expenses and comprehensive medical insurance etc; on the other hand, the partial scholarship covers one or more of the costs listed above. Beijing International Studies University being a receiving institution of the Chinese Government Scholarship, there are currently over 200 students benefiting from the Chinese Government Scholarship, including the Chinese Government Scholarship Country Awards, supporting local government scholarship, etc.

Beijing International Students Scholarship

The Beijing Scholarship for foreign Students is a tuition scholarship provided by Beijing Municipal People’s Government for outstanding foreign students studying in Beijing. The scholarship is divided into full scholarship and partial scholarship, but students must apply every semester. International undergraduates and graduate students of BISU are all allowed to apply for this scholarship.

BISU Scholarship Supporting Funds

In order to attract outstanding international students to study at BISU, enhance the quality education for international students, and expand the international impact of BISU, the municipal government of Beijing has established the “Beijing International Studies University Scholarship Funds” program. In order to cooperate with the municipal government of Beijing to carry out this project, our university has specially set up this supporting fund.

The supporting funds of the scholarship program are mainly used on the accommodation of international students who have obtained the scholarship.

Eligibility:

1. The supporting fund is mainly targeted towards outstanding students who are in need of financial aid.

2. The supporting fund is also targeted towards students that are part of the “One Belt, One Road” program.

3. The supporting fund is moderately inclined towards outstanding graduate students who have obtained the scholarship.

4. Students who have already obtained the Chinese Government Scholarships and the Confucius Institute Scholarships and have suspended their studies are not included in the assessment.

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 

For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries. the Center For Language Education And Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study International Chinese Language Education or related majors in Chinese universities and colleges.

Application Process:

1. Log on the International Chinese LanguageTeachers Scholarship application website

(cis.chinese.cn) to search for recommending institutions and host institutions;

2. Upload application materials online, and track the application progress, comments and results,

3. Scholarship holders need to confirm with the host institutions to go through the procedures of studying in China, and print out the scholarship certificate online;

4. Register at host institutions on the designated date as per the letter of admission.
