Founded in 1964, Beijing International Studies University (BISU) is a renowned institution of higher education of multi-disciplines, offering subjects and courses of literature, management, economics and philosophy, with foreign languages and tourism as its dominant disciplines. It is an important base in China for the teaching  and research of foreign languages, translation, tourism, economics and trade.

BISU enrolls an average of more than 1500 long-term and short-term international students from all over the world every year, including graduate, undergraduate, preparatory and advanced students. At present, there are more than 10,000 students at BISU.

BISU is located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, with the Central Business District (CBD) on its west and Beijing Municipal Administration Center (Tongzhou District) on its east. I. Programs and Length of Study

(I) Degree Programs

1. Bachelor Programs (four years)

(II) Non-Degree Programs

1. Preparatory Programs (more than one semester): Chinese Language and Specialized Chinese

The preparatory students are mainly taught by the School of International Education of Chinese Language. The training objective of the course is to enable students to reach the basic standard for entering the professional stage of learning in Chinese universities in terms of knowledge and ability of Chinese language, relevant professional knowledge and intercultural communication competence.

2. Chinese Language Programs (more than one semester): Chinese Language

Chinese language students are mainly taught by the School of International Education of Chinese Language. It is the teaching institution specialized in teaching international students. In addition to the undergraduate courses of Chinese Language (tourism oriented, economics and trade oriented, education oriented), it also trains and teaches Chinese language students. The courses include intensive reading, oral Chinese, listening, conversation, newspapers, audio-visual and other courses. As the first batch of HSK examination sites in Beijing, the School organizes HSK examinations five times a year (in April, May, June, October and December).

5. Short-term Visiting Student Programs (less than one semester, more than 10 students)

Chinese learning classes can be offered at different times according to the needs of students. In addition, BISU regularly organizes Chinese learning classes during the summer vacation every year.

6. Bilingual (Chinese-English) Programs (short-term and long-term, more than 10 students)

Courses on Chinese Politics, Overview of Chinese Economic Situation, Chinese Foreign Trade and Investment, Chinese History and Society, Chinese Culture, and Chinese Tourism.

II. Application Qualifications and Requirements

(I) Degree Programs

1. Bachelor Programs (Chinese Language Program)

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold a senior high school graduation diploma at least.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, resume, most recent academic certificate (senior high school students should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), transcript, copy of the certificate of new HSK Test Level 3 or above (if there is no HSK Test Level 3 certificate, a Chinese learning certificate must be provided, and the student must pass the undergraduate entrance examination of the School of International Education of Chinese Language, including written and oral examinations), and 2 recent photos. Students transferred from another domestic university should provide a copy of valid residence certificate and the certificate of the original university's consent to transfer.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester) November 30 (Spring Semester).

2. Bachelor Programs (Programs other than Chinese language)

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold a senior high school graduation diploma at least, and passing the professional basic examination and oral Chinese interview.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, resume, most recent academic certificate (senior high school students should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), transcript, copy of the certificate of new HSK Test Level 5 or above, and 2 recent photos.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester).

3. Master Program

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold bachelor's degree at least.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, resume, university diploma and bachelor's degree certificate (undergraduates should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), university course transcript, copy of certificate of the new HSK Test Level 5 or above, letters of recommendation from two professors, and 2 recent photos. Students transferred from another domestic university should provide a copy of valid residence certificate and the certificate of the original university's consent to transfer.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester).

(II) Non-degree Programs

1. Preparatory Program

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold senior high school graduation diploma at least.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, resume, most recent academic certificate (senior high school students should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), results of New HSK Test (students applying for admission in September should have HSK Level 1 to Level 2 language ability, and provide copies of relevant certificates; students applying for admission in March should have HSK Level 3 to Level 4 language ability, and provide copies of relevant certificates), and 2 recent photos.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester) November 30 (Spring Semester).

2. Chinese Language Program (Intensive Training of Chinese Language)

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold senior high school graduation diploma at least.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, resume, most recent academic certificate (senior high school students should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), and 2 recent photos.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester) November 30 (Spring Semester).

3. General Advanced Student Program

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold a senior high school graduation diploma at least.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, photocopy of passport or residence permit, resume, most recent academic certificate (senior high school students should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), transcript, copy of certificate of the new HSK Test Level 4 or above, and 2 recent photos. Students transferred from another domestic university should provide a copy of valid residence certificate and the certificate of the original university's consent to transfer.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester) November 30 (Spring Semester).

4. Senior Advanced Student Program

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health and hold a bachelor's degree at least.

(2) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, copy of passport or residence permit, resume, most recent academic certificate (undergraduates should provide proof of school attendance, and the original copy should be submitted for verification when registering), transcript, copy of the new HSK Test Level 4 certificate or above, and 2 recent photos. Students transferred from another domestic university should provide a copy of valid residence certificate and the certificate of the original university's consent to transfer.

(3) Application Deadline: May 31 (Autumn Semester) November 30 (Spring Semester).

5. Short-term Visiting Student Program

(1) Eligibility: Aged between 18-50 with good health.

(2) Time for Online Application: Short-term Chinese classes will be offered separately in summer vacation, and individuals can be accepted for short-term study during the study period.

(3) Application Documents: BISU International Student Application Form, copy of passport or residence permit, resume, and 2 recent photos.

(4) Teaching schedule: 15 class hours per week for short-term classes in summer vacation (9:00-11:25 from Monday to Friday, free time in the afternoon and on weekends).

(5) Courses: intensive reading, extensive reading, oral Chinese, audio-visual course, writing, grammar, Chinese painting. The above courses include introductory class, junior class, intermediate class, and advanced class.

III. Application and enrollment process

(I) Application

1. BISU adopts an online application procedure. Applicants can register and log into the BISU International Student Service System (http://apply.bisu.edu.cn/) for application.

2. Time for Online Application: February 20 to May 31, 2023 (Autumn Semester), August 20 to November 30, 2023 (Spring Semester). The application language is Chinese or English.

3. Applicants must fill in real, accurate, complete and valid information on the system. Applicants should be responsible for all consequences and responsibilities arising from incorrect, omitted, false or invalid information that affect the enrollment and admission.

4. In addition to filling in the online information, applicants shall also upload the attachment materials as required. The attachments should be color-scanned copies, and the originals should be kept for verification. If the application materials are not in Chinese or English, a Chinese or English translation must be attached.

(II) Review

BISU will review the application materials, organize entrance examinations or interviews depending on different programs, and admit the best candidates according to the evaluation results.

During the period of review, applicants can log in BISU International Student Service System for application update, progress and relevant notices.

It will take about 15 working days to review the material.

(III) Admission

After review, BISU will send the Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202/JW201) and the Admission Notice of BISU before January 31 (Spring Semester) or July 31 (Autumn Semester). Applicants shall apply for "X1" or "X2" visa at Chinese Embassy/Consulate abroad with the Visa Application Form, Admission Notice and Health Examination Report.

(IV) Registration

New students shall register within the time specified in the Admission Notice. Those who fail to register within the time limit and give proper reasons shall be considered as dropouts automatically.

Before registering, the students should contact the school to apply for the specific arrival time, and confirm the arrival date and relevant requirements with the school.

When registering at the university, please bring the Admission Notice, the Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW201/202 form), the original application materials and five 2-inch white background ID photos. If you have had a physical examination at your home country, please also bring all the original physical examination records.

(V) Review

BISU will review students' admission eligibility upon and after the registration. If the review proves that the admission letter, candidate information and other certifying materials held by the student are inconsistent with the actual information, or there are fraud, malpractice and other illegal circumstances, the student will be determined as unqualified, and his/her admission or the student status obtained will be canceled.

IV. Time of admission

The academic year is divided into spring and autumn semesters. Autumn semester is generally from September to January of the next year, while spring semester is generally from March to July. The specific dates are subject to BISU academic calendar.

V. Health examination

According to the relevant regulations of the Chinese government, international students who will study in China for over half a year need to submit a standard health examination form (available at Chinese Embassy/ consulate abroad), and the university will submit the forms to the designated hospital for review. Those who pass the review will pay 60 yuan as the review fee; those who fail to pass the review will be subject to supplementary examination at their own costs.

Students who do not have health examination in their own countries will be organized by BISU to go to the designated hospital for examination after arriving in China, and the cost (about 400 yuan) will be borne by the students.

VI. Insurance

According to the relevant rules of the Chinese government, international students are supposed to buy medical insurance when they stay in China. New students are required to buy Accident Insurance and Hospitalization Insurance when registering for admission. The insurance premium reference: 400 yuan per person for six months, 800 yuan per person for a year,

1. Apartment No.2 has a public kitchen and a public washroom (with washing machine and dryer);

5. If you pay the accommodation fee in advance, the accommodation fee during the winter and summer vacations can be exempted. The specific policy is subject to the regulations of the International Student Apartment Management Center.

Note:

1. Unless in special circumstances, those who fail to pay tuition and accommodation fees within ten days after registration shall pay an additional 5% overdue fine.

2. Please consider the impact of daily exchange rate changes, international bank transfer charges and other factors on the final amount of actual tuition paid, and ensure that the amount of actual tuition paid is equal to the RMB amount of tuition required by the university, and the difference caused by swap shall be borne by the students.

3. When new students enter the university, the university can handle residence application procedures for them on their behalf, and the agency fees and visa fees shall be borne by the students.

4. The application fee is not refundable; the tuition and accommodation fee are also not refundable if not attributable to the university.

IX. Scholarships

(I) Chinese Government Scholarship

 In order to enhance the understanding and friendship between the Chinese and people from all around the world, and to further the communication and collaboration in different areas, the Chinese government launches a new scholarship program, supporting excellent students, faculties, and scholars worldwide to enter top universities in China to study or conduct research. The China's Ministry of Education entrusts the Chinese Scholarship Fund Management Committee to be responsible for the enrollment and management of the Chinese Government Scholarship. The scholarship is divided into full scholarship and partial scholarship. The full scholarship will subsidize tuition, accommodation fee, living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance premiums, while the partial scholarship only subsidizes one or more of them. The full scholarship covers tuition, on-campus housing, living expenses and comprehensive medical insurance etc.; on the other hand, the partial scholarship covers one or more of the costs listed above.

BISU is one of receiving institutions of the Chinese Government Scholarship, there are currently over 200 students benefiting from the Chinese Government Scholarship, including the Bilateral Program, "High-level Graduate Students" Scholarship Program, "Silk Road" Program, "China-Africa Universities 20+20 Cooperation Plan" Program and, etc.

Application process:

1. Bilateral Program. The students should contact Chinese Embassy/Consulate abroad to apply for the scholarships. The contact information of Chinese Embassy/Consulate abroad can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China (https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/).

2. "High-level Graduate Students" Program. The students should send emails to our designated email (study@bisu.edu.cn) to apply for the scholarships.

3. "Silk Road" Program. The students should send emails to our designated email (study@bisu.edu.cn) to apply for the scholarships.

4. "China-Africa Universities 20+20 Cooperation Plan" Program. The students should send emails to our designated email (study@bisu.edu.cn) to apply for the scholarships.

 (II) International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, and help the growth of international Chinese language education talents, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education has set up the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship to focus on training qualified overseas Chinese teachers.

Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively "recommending institutions") may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study International Chinese Language Education or related programs in Chinese universities and colleges.

(III) Beijing "Belt and Road" Special Scholarship

In order to implement the Promoting the "Belt and Road" Education Action of the Ministry of Education, promote the cooperation between Beijing-based universities and countries along the Belt and Road in talent cultivation, and promote the overall development of international students studying in China, the Beijing Municipal Government has specially set up the "Belt and Road" Scholarship Program for international students in Beijing to subsidize the tuition fees of all studying stages.

The applicant must be from one of the 72 countries along the "Belt and Road", and the application program must be a master degree program taught in English (tourism management, accounting, business administration).

(IV) Beijing Government Scholarship

The Beijing Government Scholarship is a tuition scholarship sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Government for outstanding foreign students studying in Beijing. The scholarship is divided into full tuition and partial tuition, both of which need to be applied for by semester. Both undergraduate and graduate students of Beijing International Studies University can apply for this scholarship.

(V) BISU  Scholarship

In order to attract outstanding international students to study at BISU, improve the education quality of international students, and enhance the international influence of our university, Beijing International Studies University has set up the "BISU Scholarship" ..

BISU  Scholarship is mainly used to pay for the accommodation fees of international students.

1. Eligibility:

(1) The scholarship will focus on international students with financial difficulties.

(2)The scholarship will focus on supporting the international students from countries along the “Belt and Road” route.

(3) More scholarship will be moderately granted to international students with excellent performance;

(4) International students who have been granted with the Chinese Government Scholarship or the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, and those who are in the middle of suspension cannot apply for the scholarship.
